Reading Aloud to Your Child(ren)

Title: Reading Aloud with Deanna Mae from Playcrafter Kids

Goal: To discover how to generate an interactive read-aloud approach with children

Intro: Do you want to use literature to help your child(ren) connect to themselves, the world, and to other literature? You can help promote their reading skills by prompting connections and questions.

Instructions:

  • Provide a variety of literature from fiction to non-fiction.

  • Find a cozy corner or area to relax.

  • Let them choose.

  • Focus on open-ended questions and give your child time to think.

  • Reread books!

Discussion:

Open-ended questions do not have a right or wrong answer. They encourage children to think outside of the box, consider many possibilities, and will offer a time to reflect and share feelings, attitudes, and information.

Questions include:

  1. What do you think….?

  2. How do you feel (about the story, character, events)?

  3. What do you wonder?

Prediction - “What do you think will happen next?”

Reading Comprehension - “What just happened?”

Critical Thinking - “Why do you think they did that?”

Connections - “This reminds me of the time when we…”

Problem Solving - “What would you do if that happened to you?”
